08. Done is Better Than Perfect
The world needs your art
Hi Friends,
This year I’m embracing “Done is Better Than Perfect” when it comes to creative projects. Oftentimes in the pursuit of my work being ready for judgement by others, feeling that it’s “enough” or “perfect”, I end up not making the things at all. And that’s just not going to fly moving forward. Cheers to releasing that and bringing more creative energy into the world for 2025!
I’m currently reading my way through the cult-fave, The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. It is as magic as everyone says. Written for folks who dream of doing creative things with their life but feel stuck or hold themselves back for whatever reason. I experience this nearly every winter, when things are slow, dark, and so so so cold.
After reading, I’m feeling energized for another season of making, mending, and growing flowers!
Just looking through old flower photos has me so excited for what’s to come.
The behind-the-scenes work that goes into flower growing is all set for the upcoming season. Seeds are here and I’ll be starting some varieties in just a few weeks! I’m excited to be trying out some early spring flowers like Bells of Ireland and Campanula, in the hopes of extending my harvest window by a few weeks this season. That is if Mother Nature is on board with my plan.
But for now I’m soaking up the slowness of mid winter. My sewing machine is working overtime as I work on garments and quilty projects. I learned my lesson last season that when the flowers are blooming the days pass by very quickly. So I’m getting fabrics prepped now by scouring, mordanting, and most importantly labeling fabrics to use later this year. This allows me to get a dyepot going right when the flowers are ready for harvest.
As for dye projects, I’ve got a pot of logwood going with a wool sweater that has been through multiple colors and iterations so far. More on that next time!
In case you’ve also been in a rut and putting off what you really want to be doing, I hope this can serve as a little nudge for you to move in the direction of what makes you feel alive this week. Thank you for being here.
